A Test regular, Sydney usually holds the popular 'New Year Test' that is generally played in the first week of January. Sydney is known to be a good batting wicket, with the spinners appearing in the latter sessions! It does not offer the true bounce of the Gabba or the raw pace of the WACA, but turns which ensures spinners have one venue in Australia to look forward to rolling their arm over.

The history of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, a Test series between India and Australia, is one of the richest in the annals of cricketing lore. The series will conclude in Sydney with the New Year's Test, which will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground on January 3, maintaining the long-standing customs of the Australian cricket calendar.
